Experimental endocarditis. II. Staphylococcal infection of the aortic valve following placement of a polyethylene catheter in the left side of the heart.

چکیده
Proceeding from the clinical observation that intravascular polyethylene catheters easily become infected in man, the introduction of a polyethylene catheter into the right side of the heart has recently been shown to induce the formation of sterile endocarditis in rabbits.`' It was further noted that inoculation of as few as 102 staphylococci through the catheter would regularly result in staphylococcal endocarditis. In these experiments the catheter remained in the right heart until the animal was sacrificed; it thus served as a possible source of mechanical trauma and as a nidus for the seeding of microorganisms. The present study was undertaken to test whether it was possible to establish sterile and infective endocarditis in the left side of the heart utilizing techniques that previously had been shown to be effective on the right side.

Introduction: With the development of interventional cardiology in the world, in addition to coronary and aortic diseases, the treatment of heart valve diseases through catheters has recently begun. The treatment of aortic stenosis (which was only possible with open surgery and valve replacement) was first performed in the world in 2002 by Alain Cribier in France with catheter insertion of the ...
متن کاملA rare case of prosthetic aortic valve endocarditis complicated with multiple fistula to peri aortic structure
Multiple aorto-cardiac cavity communications is very rare but important complication of prosthetic aortic valve endocarditis. The case below illustrates multiple aorto-cardiac cavity fistula formation following prostethic aortic valve endocarditis presented with slowly progressive symptoms of heart failure. A brief review of surgical reconstruction and the existing literature are presented, i...
متن کاملExperimental endocarditis I. Staphylococcal endocarditis in rabbits resulting from placement of a polyethylene catheter in the right side of the heart.
Infective endocarditis continues to be a life-threatening disease despite the availability of antimicrobial agents.' Even with successful antibiotic treatment, death in intractable heart failure is common because of aortic valve destruction. Furthermore, with the increased scope of cardiac surgical procedures, one of the most serious causes of postoperative failure is infection upon prosthetic ...
متن کاملExperimental endocarditis. IV. Tricuspid and aortic valve infection with Candida albicans in rabbits.
Candida albicans is a pathogen of increasing significance in man and is the most common cause of fungal infection in patients with underlying disease(l). Endocardial infection with this microorganism usually occurs on previously damaged heart valves or after the placement of prosthetic heart valves(2). The route of entry of candida in these patients is believed to be the blood stream because of...

A total of 14 cases of infective endocarditis (IE) in children aged 6 months to 10 years were seen from December 1987 to December 1992 at the pediatric unit of Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Center. The majority of patients (12 of 14) were between 5 and 10 years of age. Acyanotic congenital heart disease was known to preexist in 78.6% and rheumatic valvular heart disease in 21.4% of cases. Or...
